1965 Ford Mustang Resto-Mod

Well, many people thought Kelsey and I were in need of professional help when we decided to 'purchase' the old, non-running Mustang that was sitting in the driveway of the house we ended up buying.
Some preliminary photos have been taken and this site will be used to archive the changes as they progress. The plan is to get the car running and then tear the motor down, prep the body for painting, and clean the heck out of it. From there we will decide what we will do with our new baby.
For the record, the car is a 1965 model, not a 1964.5, as the previous owners led us to believe. Not a big deal but the facts should be straight from the get-go...
8/03/01: After a few weeks of changing the fluids and ensuring the car was ready for the cranking of the motor (after it had been sitting for a few years), we let 'er rip and...it was magical...it started...then died...Bummer!
8/18/01: The car has been running now for a couple of weeks but needs the vacuum pressure checked. Once the condenser gets changed (again!?) it will be pressure tested, the dwell will be verified, and the timing and idle will be re-validated. If I can only figure out how to get power to the tach...
9/09/01: Car is running like a champ! Tach works now but the vacuum advance on the distributor seems to be broken. Will be requesting a new one for Christmas. Removed and replaced bumper in order to get some of the dings out of the backside. Looks better. Now, if I could only get Dreamweaver(tm) to be more cooperative...
10/11/01: It's been awhile (I love that song!!!) since I have updated the site. A lot has happened with the car (fuel tank cleaned, rear fender repaired, lubrication grease applied, wheel bearings inspected) but the most important stuff has been happening in NYC and Afghanistan (Osama Who???). Still not having any luck with the photos showing up on the next page so it may be time to bring in a professional..."Oh, Kelsey!"
10/13/01: By golly, I think I got it! Now if I could only stay healthy enough to work on the car...
11/22/01: Happy Thanksgiving!!! I have reduced the file size of the photos so it is easier and quicker to view them. The website also has questions and the quest to determine the fender VIN location. Since the last update, I have rebuilt the carburetor (it looks and runs nice!!!), replaced the starter, nearly completed the bodywork, and have resolved several electrical issues (dome light, headlight, tachometer, and horn). This is one great project!!!
11/30/01: The pictures sizes are now even smaller so loading them should be easier for you. The VIN finding issue has been resolved and I now know what traction bars look like! Not much progress has been made on the car but I do need to finish up the rear fender body work and replace the return spring for the accelerator.
12/12/01: Began process of removing clear coat from the car. Have removed most of it from the trunk and roof, now onto the sides. Received quotes for cheap paint jobs but I may actually try and do this on my own sometime next summer...We'll see! Took the car to the gas station the other day in order to fill 'er up and put air in the tires. It was kind of exciting and scary to be on the road. I need to nail down the rough idle and sticking accelerator problem before I get it registered in January.
1/23/02: Registered and titled the car earlier this month after a little deception occurred at the MVD (I hate when that happens!!). I am in the process of removing all of the chrome on the body in preparation of the paint job that I will perform on 2/09/02 (right before I leave to China for three weeks). The paint will remain red but I will try and get it looking better than it was when I got the car...We'll see! Click on the photos page for updated engine shots (it looks pretty good now!) and click here to help me with the suspension dilema.
2/3/02: Well, it's finally Super Bowl Sunday (Go Rams!!!). I resolved the rear shackle dilema (that have been replaced with stock ones) and am nearly done with the prep job prior to next week's Viper Red paint job. I really hope it turns out well...
2/19/02: She's painted and put back together!!!! To go directly to the final photos, click here ( Otherwise, you know the drill...). I also need some help determining what another item is. Kelsey rode in the car for the first time the other day and was pleasantly surprised at how she ran and looked. There is still a miss at acceleration that I cannot figure out...New carb required? At least now I can drive it to Checker so they can see it up close and personal!!!
5/2/02: Well, now that I have returned from China I have been able to finish up (kinda!) the color sanding on the Mustang but to be honest, it has been kind of hard focusing on getting any work done now that I am only a few weeks ago from my Sabbatical. I should be able to put more effort into my baby once I get settled...We'll see!
